June 8 - Food Recalls: What's Going on in the Food System?

Have you heard about the latest food recall in the news? If you have, do not panic. Join Dr. Shauna Henley to breakdown WHY a food is recalled and WHAT you can do if you have the food in your home. Not all food recalls are the same. Learn how to be safe, and get a refund for your product.​

GMOs or Genetically Modified Foods can quickly bring up many emotions for a person. Join the discussion with Dr. Shauna Henley about GMOs and their safety, how they are regulated, and what foods are GMOs or bioengineered foods. October is National Seafood Month. Take the plunge with Erin Jewell as she dives into how seafood plays a role in a healthy diet, particularly for your heart!​

 November 9 - "Un-Sugarcoating" the Truth about Diabetes

November is American Diabetes Awareness month, which reminds everyone to get their blood sugar and blood pressure tested, make an appointment for diabetes-related tests such as a dilated eye exam, dental check-up, and more! Join Cheryl Bush to discuss the best ways of preventing and managing diabetes for you or your loved ones.

 ​December 14 - An Apple a Day Keeps the Worries Away 

Diet changes cannot cure anxiety or stress; however, they may make a difference in your general mood which may help you handle stress and anxiety better. Join Beverly Jackey to learn what healthy strategies to follow and foods to watch to help relieve the symptoms of anxiety and stress.​

February is National Cancer Prevention Month! Did you know that every year, nearly 1.5 million Americans are diagnosed with some form of cancer? About 20 percent of all cancer diagnoses in the United States are linked to diet, excess weight and inactivity. Eating a healthy diet, including the types of foods and how much you consume, can affect your lifetime risk of developing certain cancers. Join Beverly Jackey, a Registered Dietitian, to learn about the link between diet and cancer, receive some recommendations to lower your cancer risk, and learn how to put these cancer prevention recommendations ‘on your plate.’ Please note, registration is required to receive the call-in number. Register here: http://bit.ly/UMETelCon

The Maryland State Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (LBPH) and the University of Maryland Extension, Family and Consumer Sciences department are pleased to announce that they will jointly host a yearlong teleconference initiative focused on healthy living and financial literacy.

The Family and Consumer Sciences division of the University of Maryland Extension Office focuses on strengthening families, communities, and the economy by focusing on the importance of food, agriculture, health, and financial education.

Examples of upcoming teleconferences include, but are not limited to:
  • Intuitive Eating: A Non-Diet Approach to Health
  • Cancer Prevention through Nutrition
  • Vitamin D: What You Need to Know
  • Superfoods for the Brain
  • Understanding Your Financial Health


These programs are free and open to the public; however, registration is required. The teleconference number, event materials, and other items will be sent to the email address used at the time of registration.

Change is coming to the Technology User Group for 2020

Beginning on January 11, 2020, and running through December 12, The Technology User Group will be doing presentations from LBPH in Baltimore.  In addition, patrons can call in by phone so to listen in and enjoy the guest speakers and demonstrations.

Understanding 3D Audio and a look at the Amazon Echo Studio

February 8:  
A Quick Look at New Streaming Video services such as Disney Plus and Apple Plus

Are you ready for winter weather?

Maryland has made much progress with respect to emergency preparedness, response, and disaster recovery. The ability to access information by all Maryland residents is crucial, particularly those with disabilities or certain limitations. Please join us on November 6 at 6:30 p.m. for a lively and informative conference call presentation with the Maryland Emergency Management Agency and the Maryland Department of Disabilities to discuss how the State of Maryland prepares for, mitigates against, and responds to emergencies and what resources are available before, during, and after a crisis.  The program should take about 40 minutes with a Q&A to follow.
